The beads that adorn this young woman in the photo are known as Krobo beads. They are produced in Ghana West Africa. The various materials used to produce them are old bottles, and various disgarded glass products. The glass is crushed into powder and placed into a pitted ceramic mold. The molds are placed into a clay oven until the glass has melted to take the shape of the pits in the ceramic mold. After they are finished in the oven each bead is rounded while still in the mold using a small metal rod. After the beads have cooled down they are then painted. Some of the beads do not require painting such as the translucent beads. This process can be seen in the video below this article. These beads are used for rights of passage ceremonies in the Krobo region of Ghana West Africa. Each girl is adorned with these beads. The ceremony symbolizes the girls entering into woman hood.
